『ももへのてがみ』or' A Letter to Momo' is about a young girl named Momo who moves from Tokyo to a small quiet island following her Father suddenly passing away in an accident. Her Father leaves behind a letter that only reads "Dear Momo," and this fuels her feeling of guilt and sadness because their last conversation ended in an argument. On top of her grief Momo struggles with loneliness and has a hard time fitting in. Then Momo begins encountering three strange yokai (spirit creatures) that secretly live in her home. Although at first it appears that they only steal food and cause mischief, they soon become Momo's secret companions. While adjusting to her new lifestyle on the island and the trouble of the yokai, Momo is able to start processing her feelings towards her Mom and Dad. By the end of the film, she finally understands what her father most likely wanted to say in the letter and is able to move forward on her healing journey.
This was not my first time watching this movie, I watched it a few years ago in my high school Japanese class. This time I definitely noticed that I was able to understand much more of the movie without subtitles and notice little details that I hadn't before. Overall I think this is a great movie and I would definitely recommend!
